Reverend Arthur Waddell was pastor of the First African Baptist Church of Beaufort. He would pastor the church from 1865 until his death in 1895. Waddell’s congregation also included the country’s most influential black man of his time, Robert Smalls. The reverend would go on to aid in the founding of black churches all across Beaufort from the mainland stretching to the Georgia Sea Islands. His grave is only one of two on the grounds of the church he served so faithfully.
