Reverend Mansfield French (1810-)

Mansfield FrenchReverend Mansfield French came to the Beaufort with the American Missionary Association.  Although he wasn’t a native or of course Gullah, French’s work would touch and inspire the scholarship of thousands of the newly freed in Beaufort.  French and his wife, Austa would provide the enterprising Gullahs who would settle and thrive in Union-occupied Beaufort with the tools they needed to construct the Reconstruction-era, Republican-held stronghold that we know existed following the Civil War.

Residence: Tabby Manse built in 1786.
Married: Austa French
